The Royal Canadian Legion is non-profit organization assuming the responsibility of maintaining the tradition of Remembrance of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice by defending our great nation in the past and present conflicts. Maintaining this tradition of Remembrance is a Sacred Trust and the Legion’s most important role. We also continue to support our Veterans of the past and present due in large part to the determination of our thousands of dedicated Volunteer members at all levels of the organization.
The Poppy has been widely recognized as a symbol of Remembrance, since it was first adopted in 1921. By wearing the Poppy, we demonstrate our gratitude to those who gave their lives for the freedoms we now enjoy. Each year, for two weeks before Remembrance Day, Legions throughout Canada carry out our Poppy Campaign. The Campaign raises awareness of the Poppy as a symbol of Remembrance.
The Poppy Fund provides immediate assistance to ex-servicemen and women in need. This may include food, shelter or medical attention for them or their families. Funds raised during the Poppy Campaign are also used for the following:
- Comforts for Veterans in hospital
- Community medical appliances
- Medical research
- Education bursaries
- Prizes for the annual Youth Remembrance Day Poster and Literary Contests
- Legion Service Bureau
Any ex-service member or dependent is eligible to apply for financial aid from the Poppy Fund, whether they are a Legion member or not.
